According to theorycrafting, Warlock is very strong in PvP, thanks to its survival abilities (Création de Pierre de soins (majeure),Pierre d'âme majeure,Pierre de sort majeure,Drain de vie) and damage. Warlocks are much more than that though, they have a wide array of crowd control spells (Peur,Hurlement de terreur,Voile mortel,Séduction,Bannir,Drain de mana).

1. Picking a race for PvP

Here are our recommendations for the best Warlock races for PvP in Classic WoW.

Horde PvP : Orc

Solidité – Very powerful in PvP : resisting a stun can turn a fight completely around.

Horde PvP : Undead

Volonté des Réprouvés : One of the best PvP racials. Anathema to priests and other warlocks.
Cannibalisme: Allows you to quickly regen your Health after a fight in order to be immediately ready for another one.

Alliance PvP : Gnome

Pensée expansive: 5% more intelligence. Highest base intelligence, making it perfect for casters both in PvE and PvP.
Maître de l'évasion: Very powerful racial to get out of a dangerous situation.


Orc is without a doubt the best Horde race for pvp thanks to Solidité. Even though the Undead’s Volonté des Réprouvés is good, it’s simply worse than 25% chance of resisting stuns. Orcs’ passive Commandement is the cherry on top for Warlocks in PvP (in PvE they sacrifice their pets to gain more damage).

Gnomes are the best race for Alliance Warlocks. Maître de l'évasion allows you to get out of roots, making it priceless in PvP. Résistance aux Arcanes helps dealing with Mages and notably their Polymorph, Spécialisation (Ingénierie) allows you to use powerful gadgets in PvP.

2. Best PvP Specs

Warlocks have numerous possibilities talent-wise in order to increase their survivability, their damage or their demon’s damage. There are 3 established specs to consider.

2.1. SL Spec 7/33/11

This is primarily a survival-oriented spec.  spé qui améliore la survie. Demonology’s ultimate talent Lien spirituel basically transforms you into a tank.

This comes at a cost however, and your damage will be notably less. That being said, Warlocks are geared toward longer fights, and at the end of the day your damage will be more than adequate, your ability to actually stay alive allowing you to catch up to more fragile damage dealers.

If you’re in danger, using Sacrifice with a summoned Voidwalker is a formidable panic button, giving you a massive shield. Don’t hesitate to use Pierre de sort majeure during this shield to absorb even more damage if you’re attacked by casters. Like SM/Ruin, you will want to use the Succube. To deal damage, you will use fire spells: Immolation,Douleur brûlante,Feu de l'âme and Conflagration. Of course, you will still be using Corruption and whichever curse is appropriate.

This is a glasscannon spec. Be careful with your positioning because you can die in seconds. Warlocks are often tempting targets and this spec is especially vulnerable to ganks.

3. PvP Tips

  • Although Warlocks have great survival tools in Classic WoW, bandages aren’t optional, they’re absolutely necessary.
  • Careful with your positioning. Warlocks lack mobility in PvE and PvP both!!
  • Farm soul fragments as much as you can, they sell like hotcakes.
  • Try to bait Coup de pied with Fear or other interruptible spells, and cancel the cast early so their interrupts end up wasted.
  • A well-geared healer or mage can be hard to take down. Drain their mana!

Warlocks are the only class in the game able to maintain two single target crowd control effect at the same time (with Seduce & Fear), allowing you to focus down a third target. These spells are on different diminishing returns, meaning you can cast Fear on the target you just seduced, and Seduce on the target you just feared for the spells’ full effect. 

If an enemy able to use fear effects (Warrior, Warlock, Priest) is around and an enemy uses Réflectombre ultra-flash, cast a Curse of Recklessness on him, making you immune to Fear spells!  

Malédiction des langages on casters/healers can turn the tide of a fight, especially if there are no (competent) enemy mages or druids around to dispell it.  

Potion de libre action and Remède tropical can be tremendously helpful with some fights.

4. Items and consumables :

Potions and consumables shouldn’t be used in duel because they’re not Fair Play. They’re very powerful items that can easily turn the tide of any fight. Before any duel, talk to your opponent and decide on a rule for consumables. If you cheat you’ll end up with a bad reputation.

5. Dueling as a Warlock

In BGs and world PvP both, 1v1s are commonplace.

This isn’t PvE, every fight is unique and how they end will mainly depend on reflexes and mechanical skill more than raw damage.. 

Against Shamans :

Best pet : Marcheur du vide against Enhancement, Invocation d'un chasseur corrompu against casters.

Here is a very useful macro that helps get rid of those pesky totems, that you can link to any of your spells. The most annoying totems are Totem de Glèbe, Totem de Séisme and Totem Furie-des-vents.

Restoration / Elemental

  • Try to get rid of Rapidité de la nature with your felhunter, although this might be easier said than done.
  • Once they’re low HP, use as many crowd control spells as you can and finish them off.
  • Note : Shamans can’t dispell Malédiction des langages.

Enhancement

  • It’s absolutely essential to bait Horion de terre. Once that is down, CC them and finish them off. Si c’est fait contrôle des foules et on achève.
  • Sacrifice if you have the time.
Against Hunters :

Best pet: Marcheur du vide

  • Good hunters will try to get you out of their « Dead Zone » (3 to 6m). Your goal is to be there. Easier said than done especially against good players. 
  • Use Voile mortel on Beast Mastery Hunters when they use Courroux bestial. Their pet is about to do a lot of damage, you’re going to need to mitigate that damage and heal yourself.
  • Persistent targeting allows you to keep targeting enemy hunters even if they use Feindre la mort, don’t forget!
Against Warlocks :

Enemy Warlocks will probably use their Felhunter in order to silence you (Verrou magique) and use Dévorer la magie. The Succubus is also a valid choice thanks to Séduction

If he chooses the latter, avoid long casts at the start of the fight, focus on Searing Pain. Use Peur to prevent the enemy from casting.

If your enemy picked the doggo, let it interrupt a Searing Pain and then cast stronger spells.
Against Druids :

Restoration or Balance :

Feral :

  • Use a rank 1 Pluie de feu (cheap) in order to detect him, or use your Voidwalker’s Souffrance. Getting him out of stealth will break his opener and allow you to avoid massive damage.
  • If you fall below 50% Health, use Sacrifice and try holding onto Pierre de soins majeure until the shield is used up.
Note :  Malédiction de fatigue is useless against Druids because they can just change form to remove it, and the Succubus’ Séduction doesn’t work on Druids in animal form.
Against Warriors:

Best pet: Marcheur du vide

  • Keep your Voidwalker alive so you can use its shield. Don’t stand next to it, Warriors are cleave specialists.
  • Try to always keep your Health above 20% so they can never Exécution. Heal yourself when you get below 50%.
  • Once the warrior’s Rage berserker is used up, you have a 20 second window to use Fear on him, don’t waste it.
If you used Sacrifice and the Warrior already used Volée de coups, control him and finish him quickly.
Against Mages:

Best pet: Invocation d'un chasseur corrompu

  • This is usually a long fight, both classes have crowd control and shields.
  • Use your dog’s Verrou magique to interrupt Métamorphose or remove Bouclier de mana or Barrière de glace.
  • Keep in mind that the mage will use Bloc de glace (twice if it’s a frost mage) avant twice before allowing you to finish him.
  • Pierre de sort majeure when he’s about to use his burst, for example as he uses  Pouvoir des arcanes. It can also be used to prevent Contresort.
  • Keep an eye on your pet’s Health, mages can easily kill them with their AoE spells without even trying to.
  • Bait Contresort with a spell from the school of magic you don’t specialize in (Shadow if you specialize in Fire spells and vice-versa) so you can cast freely. You can also try to bait it and interrupt your spell early so they waste it entirely.
Against Paladins :

Best pet against Holy - Invocation d'un chasseur corrompu
Best pet against Retribution/Protection -

Against Priests :

Best pet: Invocation d'un chasseur corrompu for its capacity to devour buffs (shields especially) and debuffs (DoTs/Silence).

Shadow :

Discipline or Holy :

  • A pure Healer vs DPS fight: Try to make them use their cooldowns as soon as possible and grind down their health bars. Once they’re at 60% Health, crowd control and try to burst them down.
  • Priests can’t dispell Malédiction des langages
Against Rogues:

Last but not least: Rogues hard-counter Warlocks. This doesn’t mean you don’t have a shot, just that you’ll have to work for it. Try to duel some Rogues in order to learn the matchup.

Best pet: Marcheur du Vide for its AoE spell and its Shield preventing interrupts.

  • Use a rank 1 Pluie de feu to try to detect him, or use your Voidwalker’s  Souffrance. Detecting the Rogue will break his opener and prevent massive damage.
  • Always keep at least one DoT on the rogue so he can’t go back to Stealth.
  • Bait his kick with a spell from the school of magic you don’t specialize in (Shadow if you specialize in Fire spells and vice-versa) so you can cast freely. You can also try to bait it and interrupt your spell early so they waste it entirely.
  • Good rogues will keep their trinket for Voile mortel so it becomes a healing spell. If he’s not good, try to finish him off during the effect.

6. Battlegrounds

In BGs, you need to analyze the situation before you act so you can:

  • Position yourself smartly
  • Assist other damage dealers
  • Spot and control or eliminate enemy healers.

All this while keeping in mind the goal of the BG. Good communication is necessary. Voice chat is often required in order to coordinate your attacks. If not on voice chat, use short, easily intelligible sentences and well known shorthand for locations and status updates (“inc farm 3”).

Warsong Gulch :

Warlocks are not flag carriers. Do not take the flag unless there’s nobody else doing it. Even with the SL spec, you’re still a clothie and your mobility is nonexistent. To hell with the glory, it won’t make you win. If you do take it, try to give it to someone else as soon as possible.

If you’re with the flag carrier, use crowd control spells as much as you can so he can get back to your base. Your lack of mobility probably means you’ll fall behind him, keep that in mind.

If you’re playing defense, be careful where you put your pet. A warlock without his demon isn’t a mage; he’s just weak (in PvP). Your job remains controlling enemy players as much as possible, and killing flag carriers. Give allied flag carriers a Pierre de soins majeure when they show up.

Don’t Soulstone yourself; use it on a well-geared healer so he has a better shot at surviving the enemy tide and helping escort the flag carrier.

Don’t try to fight in the middle of the map for no reason. The only goal is the flag.

Arathi Basin:

Defending an area can lead to non-stop fights which will allow you to learn how to fight 1v1, 1v2, 1v3…

Focus on defending the Sawmill, it gives good vision on enemy movement and with Eye of Kilrogg you can scout. Don’t get ganked while channeling that spell though! 


While Warlocks are powerful in PvP in Classic WoW, don’t try to defend zones by yourself. Communicate with your team to announce the arrival of enemies, and don’t forget that some may be stealthed.

Alterac Valley :

When defending a tower/graveyard: Cause some pandemonium by using a lot of crowd control spells, DoT everything and kite enemies trying to off you.

Communicate with your raid so you can use one of your class’ tool : teleporting players around with Rituel d'invocation!
